Nigeria Confirms Ebola Case in Abuja, Tracks 44 Contacts
The Federal Government has confirmed Nigeria’s first case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with health authorities tracing 44 people who may have been exposed to the infection.
The case was laboratory-confirmed on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following the admission of a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda.
According to the government, the patient had received treatment at a private hospital in the FCT for several days before being isolated, where she is currently receiving care.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said contact tracing was underway, with 44 close contacts identified so far. They include healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel contacts.
The Federal Government said it was working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and FCT health authorities to contain the infection and prevent further transmission.
Authorities have urged Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant, maintain regular hand hygiene and promptly report suspected exposure or symptoms to public health officials.
The NCDC’s toll-free call centre, available round the clock, can be reached on 6232 for information and reporting suspected cases.
