Tinubu Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Transport Support for Workers
President Bola Tinubu has approved a monthly transport allowance of ₦70,000 for public service workers across all levels of government for six months, beginning in November 2026.
The approval followed a meeting on Tuesday, October 27, between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by its President, Joe Ajaero.
The intervention is aimed at cushioning the effects of rising living costs, particularly the impact of increased fuel prices on workers.
According to the Federal Government, the transport support is expected to commence on November 5, 2026, and will run for six months.
The government also approved the payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears, effective from May 1, 2026. The arrears will be paid in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.
In addition, the Federal Government and the NLC agreed to establish a negotiation committee to begin discussions on determining an effective date for implementing a new national minimum wage.
The agreements came as the four-day ultimatum issued by the NLC to the Federal Government expired on Tuesday. The labour union had threatened to shut down economic activities over rising fuel prices and demanded a review of the ₦70,000 minimum wage.
The latest measures form part of efforts to address workers’ concerns amid mounting economic pressures.
