The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that there will be no reversal of its planned nationwide protest scheduled for December 17, as pressure mounts on the Federal Government to take decisive action against the worsening insecurity across the country.
The National President of the NLC, Mr. Joe Ajaero, made this known shortly after a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the 19 Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya.
Ajaero said the protest was aimed at drawing urgent national attention to the growing insecurity, which he noted now affects all Nigerians regardless of social status, profession, or location. According to him, the continued rise in banditry, kidnappings, and violent crimes poses a serious threat to national stability and social cohesion.
He described the wave of violent crimes as alien to Nigeria’s culture and values, stressing that it must be collectively condemned and confronted to reverse what he termed a dangerous and unacceptable national narrative.
“Insecurity is no longer a regional or isolated issue. It has become a national crisis that impacts workers, businesses, students, and families alike,” Ajaero said.
The NLC leader also warned that the persistent security challenges are taking a heavy toll on the economy, discouraging both local and foreign investment and further weakening livelihoods across the country.
Reacting to recent attacks, Ajaero strongly condemned the kidnapping and killing of a school staff member during an attack on a school in Kebbi State. He also expressed concern over reports that security personnel had been withdrawn from the affected school before the incident.
“The surge in attacks on schools is deeply alarming,” he said. “We call on the Federal Government to immediately secure all schools, especially those in remote and vulnerable areas, to prevent further loss of innocent lives.”
The NLC had earlier, on December 8, announced plans for a nationwide protest to demand improved security and stronger government response to the crisis. The Congress reaffirmed that the planned action would proceed as scheduled unless concrete and effective measures are taken to address the situation.
The union called on Nigerians to support the protest in the interest of national safety, economic stability, and the protection of lives and property.
