Abia State-born para powerlifter, Esther Nworgu, has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after producing a record-breaking performance in the women’s para powerlifting lightweight event.
Nworgu, who hails from Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, set a new Commonwealth Games record with a remarkable lift of 119.0kg to clinch the gold medal and give Team Nigeria a dream start to the competition.
Fellow Nigerian Esther Onyema claimed the silver medal with a lift of 115.5kg, while Olivia Broome of England secured the bronze medal after lifting 106.6kg.
Kenya’s Hellen Wawira Kariuki, England’s Charlotte McGuinness and India’s Suman Devi finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Earlier, Nigeria’s Roland Ezuruike had won silver in the men’s lightweight para powerlifting event, earning Team Nigeria’s first medal of the Games.
With Nworgu’s gold and the two silver medals won by Ezuruike and Onyema, Team Nigeria ended the opening day of competition with one gold and two silver medals.
Nworgu’s latest triumph adds to her growing list of international achievements, having won a silver medal for Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. Her Glasgow success further reinforces her status as one of Nigeria’s leading para powerlifters.
