The campaign organisation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Abia State, Chief Eric Opah, has dismissed as fake a statement circulating on social media alleging that he promised to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu if elected governor in 2027.
In a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity of the Eric Opah Campaign Organisation, Mr. Eric Ikwuagwu, the group described the claim as false, misleading and politically motivated.
The viral statement had purportedly quoted Chief Opah as saying he would “set Mazi Nnamdi Kanu free” upon becoming governor of Abia State.
However, the campaign organisation insisted that the APC governorship candidate never made such a remark either publicly or privately.
According to the statement, the fabricated quote was the handiwork of “desperate propagandists” seeking to misinform the public and drag Chief Opah into needless controversy ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
The organisation condemned the spread of fake news and accused certain political actors of resorting to blackmail, falsehood and character assassination instead of engaging in issue-based politics.
It maintained that Chief Opah remains committed to responsible leadership, lawful governance, peace and the development of Abia State.
The campaign team further urged members of the public, party supporters and media practitioners to disregard the statement and rely only on official communication channels for verified information concerning the APC candidate.
It also warned individuals behind the alleged fake publication to desist from actions capable of creating unnecessary tension in the political environment.
