Troops of the Nigerian Army have uncovered and neutralized multiple Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted in a forest in Abia State.
The operation was carried out by soldiers of the 145 Battalion (Rear) following credible intelligence indicating the presence of explosives in Umuchima Forest, located in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued on Friday, Captain Muyiwa Ayara, who signed on behalf of the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Ohafia, said the troops conducted the operation in the early hours of April 3, 2026.
According to the statement, a detailed analysis of the intelligence prompted the troops to launch a deliberate clearance and fighting patrol into the forest, where they discovered four IEDs strategically planted at different locations.
The Army said the explosives were suspected to have been planted as part of a coordinated attempt to restrict troop movement and shield suspected insurgent hideouts within the forest.
Following the discovery, the 14 Brigade Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was immediately deployed to handle the situation.
The statement added that the devices were safely detonated in situ, while some components were recovered and moved to a secure location for further technical analysis.
The Army noted that the recovered materials would support ongoing intelligence efforts and provide insights into the operational methods of the suspected insurgent group.
