Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) until he fulfills the conditions attached to the bail granted to him by a Federal High Court in Kaduna.
The court, presided over by Rilwanu Aikawa, granted the former governor bail in the corruption case filed against him by the anti-graft agency but ruled that he must remain in detention pending compliance with the bail terms.
Reacting to the development, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and close associate of the former governor, Hayatudeen Lawal Makarfi, described the conditions as excessive.
Speaking with journalists after the court session, Makarfi said the judge imposed numerous requirements, including the provision of landed property, a N200 million bond, and a surety who must hold a recognized traditional title, among several other conditions.
According to him, the number and nature of the conditions were too demanding.
“The bail conditions are many — from landed properties to N200 million bond and a surety with a traditional title. There are so many conditions, numbering almost ten or more,” he said.
He expressed concern that the stringent requirements could make it difficult for the former governor to regain his freedom promptly.
El-Rufai was earlier arraigned in court over corruption allegations brought against him by the ICPC.
