ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike, Gives Universities 14-Day Ultimatum

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to several university branches over unresolved demands linked to the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement, paving the way for a fresh strike across the affected institutions.

The decision was reached at the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.

ASUU accused the Federal Government of “haphazard implementation” of the 2025 agreement and expressed concern over the failure of several state universities to implement the pact.

Among the branches authorised to commence strike procedures after the ultimatum is the ASUU branch of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu.

Other affected institutions include Nasarawa State University, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Gombe State University, Plateau State University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Ambrose Alli University, Imo State University, Niger Delta University and Taraba State University, among others.

The NEC resolved that upon the expiration of the ultimatum, all concerned branches should embark on strike to press home their demands.

It also noted that branches in the Sokoto and Owerri Zones had already issued two-week ultimatums, while any other branch with evidence of issuing an ultimatum to its university should proceed with strike action.

The union said an emergency NEC meeting would be convened at the end of August or early September 2026 to take further decisions on the situation.

ASUU also reaffirmed its “No-pay-No-work” policy, which allows branches to take industrial action when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month. Branches in federal universities where salaries were underpaid were similarly directed to take action.
