Christian Genocide: Tinubu Set for Emergency Talks With Trump

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to meet with United States’ President, Donald Trump in the coming days amid rising global concern over alleged attacks on Christians in Nigeria.

This was confirmed by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, who disclosed the planned meeting in a statement on Sunday.

Bwala said the high-level engagement will focus on recent claims of a “Christian genocide” in parts of Nigeria, as well as broader efforts to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation between both nations.

He noted that both leaders have previously demonstrated shared commitment to combating insurgency and extremist violence across West Africa.

“President Bola Tinubu and President Donald Trump have shared interest in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity,” Bwala posted on X.

The meeting follows Trump’s recent comments accusing Nigerian authorities of failing to adequately protect Christian communities from violent attacks. Trump had warned that the United States could consider cutting aid to Nigeria and even hinted at possible military action if what he described as “targeted killings” continue.

In response, the Nigerian Presidency emphasized its ongoing efforts to address insecurity and protect all citizens regardless of religion. Bwala further recalled that during Trump’s previous term in office, the U.S. approved military equipment sales to Nigeria, support that he said the Tinubu administration has continued to deploy effectively in anti-terror operations.

The planned diplomatic engagement is expected to reinforce security ties, address concerns raised by international observers, and strengthen Nigeria’s stance against terrorism and sectarian violence.
