A Nigerian-born, US-based medical doctor, High Chief Dr. Ikechukwu Samuel Emelandu, has donated a well-built, fully equipped and furnished community secondary school, valued at approximately ₦80 million, to the Abia State Government in Umuagu Ohuhu Autonomous Community, Umuahia North Local Government Area.

The school, which is expected to improve access to secondary education in the community, was formally handed over to the state government at a ceremony attended by community leaders and education stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Governor Alex Otti, represented by the Education Secretary of Umuahia North LGA, Mrs Florence Odo Enyinna Umezurike, commended Emelandu for his commitment to educational development and investment in the future of children.

The governor’s representative particularly applauded the provision of learning facilities, amenities and school uniforms, urging the community to take ownership of the institution and ensure its proper maintenance.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler of Umuagu Ohuhu Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Engr. John Amaghereonu Ezeoma, described the donation as a landmark intervention that would bring secondary education closer to children and save them the hardship of travelling to neighbouring communities to attend school.

In his remarks, Emelandu disclosed that he had invested approximately ₦80 million in the renovation, construction and furnishing of the school.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the students and expressed plans to expand the institution to accommodate senior secondary school classes.

The Acting Principal, Mrs Ruth Nneoma Okorie, disclosed that the school currently has 49 students, assuring that the management would uphold high academic standards, discipline and effective teaching.

Earlier, Emelandu’s Personal Assistant and project supervisor, Sir Paul Nwaogwugwu, highlighted his principal’s other humanitarian interventions, including medical assistance, youth empowerment and scholarship programmes through the Late Chief Godwin Emelandu Foundation for Scholarship and Education Fund.

It would be recalled that Emelandu, in 2025, also donated renovated and fully equipped classroom blocks to Umuagu Central School as part of his contributions to educational development in the community.

The latest intervention is expected to expand access to quality secondary education, reduce the burden on pupils and parents, and create better learning opportunities for children in Umuagu Ohuhu and neighbouring communities.
