Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, has moved to build a market for residents of the old Port Harcourt Township.

Fubara who visited the area popularly called Town on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, recalled that he inaugurated a committee some weeks ago with a mandate to redevelop the place, adding that it is as part of his administration’s resolve of redesigning and redeveloping the area.

Gov. Fubara, who was hailed by crowd of residents, said he got many telephone calls from the old boys of the area, who pleaded with him to first sort out issues surrounding the market.

He said: “With the position of things in Town, you are aware that some weeks ago a committee was inaugurated for the redevelopment of old Port Harcourt Township. I have been getting a lot of calls from the old boys of Town that if we have to do anything, first of all we need to sort out the issue of market”.

He observed that the initial relocation of the Town Market during the reconstruction of the Creek Road affected the face of the Town.

Gov. Fubara emphasised that he visited with the chairman of the Special Committee for the Redevelopment of Port Harcourt Township headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo along with the Commissioners for Housing, Barr. Benibo Anabraba and that of his, Physical Planning & Urban Development counterpart, Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi to ascertain the best approach to handle the redesigning and redevelopment of the old city.

“I can say here that the first thing we are going to do immediately before we start the cleaning and redesigning of Town is to make sure that we give them a befitting market and immediately move those people out of those special areas so we can commence beautifying the town areas.

“So, I can tell you that I feel very sad that our people are going through this in the cause of development. I assure them that government is a continuum that we will do everything to make sure that we settle them in an appropriate and well befitting market”.
