Renowned Highlife music icon and folklorist, Mike Ejeagha, has passed away at the age of 95.
Ejeagha, widely celebrated for his masterful fusion of Igbo proverbs and folklore into soul-stirring music, died on Friday night at approximately 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, after a prolonged illness.
His eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the passing in a telephone conversation.
With a career that spanned decades, Mike Ejeagha was a dominant presence on Nigerian airwaves, especially in the 1980s, where his distinct storytelling style and lyrical depth captivated audiences across generations. His work not only entertained but preserved the cultural heritage of the Igbo people through music.
Ejeagha’s legacy as a pioneer of indigenous Highlife and a custodian of Igbo oral tradition remains deeply etched in the annals of Nigerian music history.
