Former senator, Florence Ita Giwa, has recounted the traumatic moment she saw the remains of her ex-husband, veteran journalist Dele Giwa, following his tragic death.
Speaking in an emotional interview on Arise TV, Ita Giwa described being escorted to the mortuary shortly after the incident, accompanied by two prominent figures — Segun Osoba and Gani Fawehinmi.
According to her, the experience remains one of the most painful memories of her life. She said she was unprepared for the devastating sight that confronted her.
“We were taken into the mortuary… and I saw this human being lying in pieces. How much can a human being take? I took all of that in,” she recalled.
Dele Giwa, a respected journalist and founding editor of Newswatch magazine, was killed in 1986 in a parcel bomb explosion that shocked the nation and drew widespread condemnation locally and internationally. His death remains one of the most controversial assassinations in Nigeria’s media history.
Ita Giwa spoke of her deep admiration for his intellect, courage, and fearless disposition, qualities she said defined his journalism and personal life. She noted that his commitment to truth and accountability made his death even more heartbreaking.
The former senator’s reflections have reignited conversations about the unresolved circumstances surrounding Giwa’s killing and the enduring impact of his legacy on press freedom and democratic discourse in Nigeria.
