Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have thwarted attempts by suspected traffickers to smuggle illicit drugs through the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport and the Seme Border, uncovering narcotics concealed in a fake pregnancy and inside a suspect’s stomach.
The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the development in a statement shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday.
According to the statement, a 35-year-old businesswoman identified as Rabi Muhammad was intercepted by NDLEA operatives at the Seme border while attempting to cross into Cotonou, Benin Republic.
Officers reportedly became suspicious after observing her unusually protruding stomach. A subsequent search revealed that the pregnancy was fake. Further checks showed that she had strapped a pink-coloured calabash to her abdomen, which contained 3,200 capsules of tramadol intended for illegal sale across the border.
The agency said the interception forms part of its ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking networks operating through Nigeria’s air and land borders. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while the suspect remains in custody.
The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to intensifying surveillance and intelligence-led operations to curb the trafficking and abuse of illicit substances nationwide.
