The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has alleged that the recent surge in insecurity across Nigeria is politically motivated and linked to the build-up to the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the claim today while delivering a goodwill message at the inauguration of the headquarters of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).
According to him, some political actors are allegedly sponsoring violent incidents in an attempt to distract Nigerians and undermine the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the next election cycle.
“You’re seeing insecurity today, and it’s even increasing because the election is coming. As soon as the election is over, for the first two weeks you will not hear a single bomb blast because people are sponsoring it to distract you,” Akpabio said.
The Senate President also pointed to what he described as growing political alignment with the president, noting that several state governors have come under Tinubu’s political influence since the 2023 elections.
He further referenced controversy surrounding an X account allegedly linked to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, dismissing claims that the post suggested bias in the electoral process.
However, INEC has denied that its chairman operates or owns the account in question.
Akpabio’s comments come amid heightened security concerns across the country following a series of violent incidents.
Reports indicate that President Tinubu recently held a closed-door meeting with security chiefs at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja as part of efforts to address the worsening security situation.
In the North-East, a recent airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force reportedly caused civilian casualties alongside suspected insurgents, attracting criticism from rights groups.
Meanwhile, a senior military officer, Oseni Braimah, was killed during an attack on a military formation in Borno State on April 9, while another incident reportedly claimed the lives of a colonel and several soldiers earlier this week.
The deteriorating security situation has also drawn international concern, with the United States Department of State authorising the voluntary departure of non-essential embassy staff from Abuja due to safety concerns.
