Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive action against those responsible for recurring attacks on Christian communities across the country.
In a statement issued on Friday, Meloni condemned the growing wave of violence, stressing that religious freedom is a fundamental human right that must be protected.
“We strongly condemn the renewed violence against Christian communities in Nigeria. Religious freedom is an inalienable right,” she said. “We call on the Nigerian government to strengthen protection for Christian and all religious communities, and to prosecute those responsible for this heinous attack.”
Meloni also expressed solidarity with victims of recent attacks, noting that many communities now “feel in danger because of their religious beliefs.”
Her remarks follow a series of violent incidents targeting Christians. On Tuesday evening, gunmen attacked a church in the Eruku area of Kwara State, killing two worshippers and kidnapping the pastor along with several congregants. The incident occurred just days after 25 girls were abducted from a boarding school in Kebbi State.
The renewed violence has drawn increased international attention. U.S. President Donald Trump recently criticized the Nigerian government over alleged persecution of Christians and hinted at possible military action.
The latest developments have further intensified pressure on Nigerian authorities to enhance security and bring perpetrators to justice.
