Kidnapped Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After Over 50 Days in Captivity

The pupils and teachers who were abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in the custody of their captors.

The development was confirmed today (Friday, July 10, 2026) by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, through a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo, have been freed by their abductors,” Onanuga stated, expressing relief over the victims’ release.

The victims were kidnapped during an attack that sparked widespread concern across Oyo State and the country, with parents, residents, and civil society organisations repeatedly calling for urgent government intervention to secure their safe return.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding their release, including whether any ransom was paid or if security operations led to their freedom.

The Oyo State Government and security agencies are yet to issue an official statement providing further details on the victims’ condition or the next steps, including medical evaluation and reunification with their families.
