Operatives of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed a warehouse in Umummeje, Osisioma Local Government Area (LGA), Abia State, containing expired foreign drugs and supplements.
The main suspect behind the fake drug business has fled, but efforts are underway to apprehend them.
According to NAFDAC’s South East zonal Coordinator, Martins Iluyomade, the warehouse was packed with expired foreign pharmaceutical products, which were either purchased for repackaging or received from importers for resale to unsuspecting members of the public.
A special machine used to repackage and rebrand the expired products was discovered on site, and several suspects were arrested during the operation, which was carried out in collaboration with the Nigeria Army, DSS, Police, and other agencies.
Iluyomade expressed concern about the impact of fake and expired products on public health, citing the rising cases of kidney damage and other organ failures. He appreciated the support of the Presidency and Governor Alex Otti in NAFDAC’s crusade against fake and expired products.
This operation is the latest in NAFDAC’s efforts to combat the sale of fake and expired products in Nigeria. In December 2024, the agency shut down 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, for selling fake and expired goods.
