The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Mrs. Nwoko Gift, for allegedly attempting to kill her 12-year-old niece, Miss Ebo Chimamanda, at their residence in IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia.
The arrest followed a viral video circulating on social media showing a woman allegedly attacking a young girl with a kitchen knife.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the Command said preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred on July 5, 2026, after the girl allegedly failed to spread clothes before the suspect left for the market.
According to the police, the suspect, who hails from Ehimembano in Imo State but resides in Umuahia, allegedly attempted to kill the victim, who lives with her and is her niece.
The Command further disclosed that investigations revealed the suspect had repeatedly assaulted the child and allegedly threatened on several occasions to kill her.
Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters, Umuahia, swiftly responded to the scene, rescued the victim, arrested the suspect and recovered the kitchen knife allegedly used in the attack.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, while the suspect is expected to be charged with attempted murder upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Police Command condemned the incident and urged members of the public to refrain from acts of violence. It also encouraged residents to promptly report similar incidents to the nearest police station.
The statement reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
