Tinubu Pledges Stronger Army, Defence Industry at Army Day
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising the Nigerian Army and strengthening the country’s defence industry to enhance national security and address emerging threats.
The President made the pledge in a message delivered by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration held on Monday at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium.

Tinubu said the Federal Government would continue investing in modern military capabilities to ensure the Nigerian Army remains well-equipped to confront evolving security challenges and improve its operational readiness.
He also pledged to strengthen Nigeria’s defence manufacturing capacity through the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), describing indigenous defence production as vital to both national security and economic development.

The President welcomed the establishment of the African Armed Forces Forum, saying it would deepen defence diplomacy, promote knowledge sharing and strengthen collaboration among African militaries.
According to him, the partnership between the Nigerian Army and Great Minds Event Management underscores the growing role of public-private collaboration in advancing defence innovation and local military production.

Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration would continue supporting research, innovation and capacity building to develop sustainable solutions to the country’s security challenges.
He described the Nigerian Armed Forces as one of Africa’s finest institutions, noting that the military has consistently demonstrated professionalism, discipline and dedication in protecting Nigeria and contributing to international peacekeeping operations.

The President commended officers and soldiers for their courage and sacrifices, saying the peace enjoyed by millions of Nigerians is made possible by their vigilance and commitment.
Speaking on the theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” Tinubu said it reflects the enduring bond between the military and the citizens it serves.

He paid tribute to fallen officers and soldiers who lost their lives in the defence of the nation, assuring their families that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.
Tinubu also acknowledged the contributions of the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He further stressed the need for greater cooperation among African countries in intelligence sharing, border security, counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, climate security and the application of artificial intelligence in modern military operations.

The President assured Nigerians that his administration would continue strengthening the Armed Forces through strategic investments, advanced technology and improved operational capabilities.
Speaking at the event, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism, enhanced operational capacity and commitment to preserving Nigeria’s unity and security.
Fubara emphasised the need to prioritise the welfare of military personnel, noting that improved welfare would further motivate officers and soldiers to carry out their constitutional responsibilities effectively.

He thanked the Army leadership for choosing Rivers State to host the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration, describing the decision as a strong vote of confidence in the peace and security currently prevailing in the state.
According to the governor, the successful hosting of the national event has dispelled negative perceptions about insecurity in Rivers State, demonstrating confidence in the state’s security architecture.
Fubara also applauded the military parade, tactical displays and demonstrations, describing them as evidence of the Nigerian Army’s growing professionalism, technological advancement and improved manpower development.
He commended President Tinubu for supporting the Army through sustained investments aimed at strengthening its operational effectiveness and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting all security agencies operating in Rivers State.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended President Tinubu for his unwavering support in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Army and strengthening national defence.
Shaibu also praised Governor Fubara for providing a peaceful environment and sustained support for military operations in Rivers State.
He said the annual Nigerian Army Day Celebration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices, resilience and enduring legacy of the Army, while reaffirming its commitment to defending the nation against terrorism, insurgency and other emerging security threats.
