The Enugu State Police Command says it rescued 211 kidnapped victims and detained 6,240 suspects during 17 months of security operations across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, disclosed the figures while receiving the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, Miller Dantawaye, during a working visit to the command.

According to the police, the figures cover the period from March 11, 2025, when Giwa assumed office as commissioner, to September 2026.

The command said those detained included 158 suspected kidnappers, 186 suspected armed robbers, 188 murder suspects and 57 suspects linked to rape and defilement.

It also reported the detention of 273 suspected cultists and 63 people for alleged unlawful possession of firearms.

The remaining 5,315 suspects were detained in connection with various other offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism.

Police said their operations also yielded the recovery of 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of assorted ammunition.

Among the recovered weapons were 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle. A total of 209 vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles were also reportedly recovered.

The commissioner attributed the results to intelligence-led operations, increased patrols and cooperation with neighbouring states.

He identified the Violent Crime Response Unit, intensified border patrols and improved emergency response systems as some of the measures deployed by the command.

Giwa nevertheless called for additional manpower, logistics and improved personnel welfare to sustain the security operations.

The figures represent police operational claims and do not, by themselves, indicate the outcome of prosecution of the suspects.
