Why Many in Abia South See Erondu Jnr as APC’s Strongest Option

In politics, there are aspirants who merely seek office, and there are those whose personal story gradually becomes intertwined with the hopes of the people.

For many supporters within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia South Senatorial District, the growing momentum around Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr is not accidental. They see in him a politician whose journey combines legislative productivity, grassroots compassion and years of consistent party loyalty.

His rise has been shaped less by loud political drama and more by visible interventions that many communities can point to directly.

When Erondu Jnr speaks about leadership, he often returns to one principle; impact must be felt by ordinary people. That philosophy appears to have defined both his legislative activities in the Abia State House of Assembly and his humanitarian engagements long before his current senatorial ambition emerged.

Since emerging victorious in the March 18, 2023 election to represent Obingwa-West State Constituency and his inauguration into the 8th Abia Assembly on June 14, 2023, the lawmaker has steadily carved a reputation as one of the active voices in the legislature.

He proudly recalls moving the very first motion of the 8th Assembly shortly after the removal of fuel subsidy; a motion urging the suspension of the proposed electricity tariff hike by the Federal Government.

The motion was adopted by the House and transmitted to the National Assembly, which also aligned with the resolution before forwarding it to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to Erondu Jnr, the intervention contributed to the suspension of the tariff increase for one year, offering temporary relief to Nigerians facing economic hardship.

But beyond parliamentary debates and motions, it is perhaps his social interventions that have strengthened his grassroots appeal across Abia South.

One story, in particular, continues to define the humanitarian side of his political journey.

Years ago, a widow, Mrs. Mercy Nwagwu, popularly known as “Daa Nne” had approached him seeking financial help. As discussions continued, another woman quietly revealed that the widow’s greatest challenge was not money for feeding, but the absence of a home.

That revelation changed everything.

Moved by her situation, Erondu Jnr immediately commenced the construction of a two-bedroom bungalow for the widow. What began as a single act of compassion would later evolve into a wider housing intervention programme that has reportedly delivered 43 two-bedroom houses to widows and vulnerable persons across different communities.

For many of his admirers, that story captures the essence of his politics; leadership driven by empathy rather than mere rhetoric.

His supporters argue that very few politicians in the region can match the scale of his empowerment footprint.

Through his foundation and outreach initiatives, six civic halls have been constructed to support community development activities, while 92 vehicles; including buses, mini trucks, mini tippers and a coaster bus, have reportedly been distributed to beneficiaries to improve livelihoods and economic stability.

In healthcare, he says over 30,000 assorted medical equipment, including dialysis machines and incubators, have been donated to hospitals and medical institutions to strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly maternal and child healthcare services.

Education has equally remained central to his interventions.

More than 7,000 students, according to him, have benefited from sponsorship for WAEC and JAMB examinations, while scholarships have been awarded to indigent but brilliant students in tertiary institutions both within and outside Nigeria.

One encounter remains deeply memorable to him: meeting a former beneficiary who informed him that he had successfully completed medical school and qualified as a doctor. For Erondu Jnr, moments like that represent the true reward of public service.

His empowerment programmes also extend to small business owners and young entrepreneurs. Twenty-four generating sets have reportedly been distributed to artisans and business operators, particularly those involved in ice block production and beverage preservation.

In addition, over 102 laptops have been awarded to outstanding students through quiz competitions, while 200 desktop computers were distributed to schools, churches and hospitals to improve learning and administrative efficiency.

Under the Igodo Igwe Foundation, he also says over 250 motorcycles have been distributed to beneficiaries within and outside Abia State.

Within APC circles, supporters believe these interventions have helped Erondu Jnr build something many politicians struggle to attain; emotional connection with ordinary people.

They also point to his long-standing relationship with the APC itself. Long before the party became competitive in Abia politics, Erondu Jnr was already deeply involved in its formation and structure. He notes that he served as the first Administrative Secretary of the APC in Abia State following the party’s formation in 2013.

That history of loyalty, many argue, gives him credibility among party faithful.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Public Service Matters, he has also sponsored notable bills, including the Corporate Social Responsibility Bill (HAB 23), designed to encourage companies operating in Abia to invest in infrastructure and development within host communities.

Another proposed legislation, HAB 24, seeks to improve maternity and newborn welfare in order to reduce maternal and child mortality, while HAB 25 focuses on establishing an Informatics Centre aimed at strengthening ICT development and data management in the state.

Now seeking the APC ticket for Abia South Senatorial District ahead of 2027, Erondu Jnr insists he did not initially plan to return immediately into another electoral contest. According to him, mounting pressure from supporters, political associates and consultations after prayers eventually convinced him to step forward.

As APC delegates and stakeholders gather today for the crucial Abia South Senatorial primary election, many party faithful believe the moment demands careful political calculation, wisdom and strategic thinking. Beyond sentiments, they argue that the party must prioritize competence, proven grassroots acceptance, legislative capacity, political experience and most importantly, electability.

For supporters of Erondu Jnr, the conversation goes beyond who wins the primary today; it is about who possesses the structure, reach, credibility and public goodwill to eventually secure victory for the APC in the 2027 general elections.

They insist that in a politically competitive district like Abia South, the party cannot afford to gamble with its ticket. Rather, delegates must consider aspirants with visible track records, deep grassroots connections and the ability to attract support across communities, wards and local government areas.

To many within the party, Erondu Jnr’s blend of empowerment, accessibility, loyalty to the APC and legislative visibility positions him as one of the strongest contenders capable of carrying the party’s banner successfully beyond the primaries.

His admirers believe his story reflects not just political ambition, but political preparedness — the type built gradually through years of relationships, service and consistent engagement with ordinary people.

And perhaps that is why his story continues gaining traction across communities in Abia South.

Because in the end, political strength is not always measured by slogans or billboards alone. Sometimes, it is reflected in the widows who now have roofs over their heads, the students who gained access to education, the entrepreneurs who received support to survive, and the ordinary people who feel remembered long after elections are over.

For APC delegates and stakeholders, today’s decision may ultimately shape the party’s future in Abia South. And many supporters believe that choosing wisely could mean giving the party a candidate whose political strength, grassroots appeal and proven track record stand the best chance of delivering victory in 2027.
