2027 Polls: Tinubu Orders Political Appointees to Resign by March 31

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive, conveyed through a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), applies to ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal aides, as well as directors-general and chief executives of federal agencies, commissions, and government-owned enterprises.

The circular was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and released by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Kana. It stated that the directive is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of party primaries for the 2027 polls.

According to the directive, all affected officials must submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office not later than the stipulated deadline. The requirement covers any presidential appointee intending to participate in party primaries or contest for elective positions.

President Tinubu said the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and providing a level playing field for all aspirants. He urged all concerned officials to strictly adhere to the directive, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to credible electoral processes and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

The development comes amid increasing political activities nationwide following the release of the 2027 election timetable by INEC. Nigeria’s electoral framework requires political appointees to step down before participating in party primaries, a measure designed to prevent abuse of office and ensure fairness in the electoral process.
