The Indigenous Akwete Women Weaving Cooperative Society Ltd. and the Akwete community have commended First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, and his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, for their contributions to the promotion of Akwete weaving and women’s economic empowerment.
The commendation was contained in a statement signed by Dame Caroline I. Okere Ogbonna on behalf of the cooperative, which expressed particular gratitude to Senator Tinubu for her interest in Akwete fabric and efforts that have brought greater attention to the traditional craft.
The society said the recognition had provided renewed visibility for Akwete weaving and encouraged greater appreciation of the skills and creativity of the women who have preserved the craft across generations.
It described Akwete weaving as an important part of the community’s cultural heritage, noting that the craft embodies the history, identity, ingenuity and economic strength of generations of Akwete women.
The cooperative also praised Governor Otti’s administration for its focus on Made-in-Abia products, saying the initiative was creating opportunities for artisans, cooperatives and women-owned enterprises to expand their activities and contribute to the state’s economic development.
According to the society, increased attention to locally produced goods would enable Akwete women to turn their traditional skills into sustainable businesses while ensuring that the cultural heritage of the community remains alive.
The women equally appreciated Mrs. Priscilla Otti for her support for women and families, as well as her advocacy for grassroots development across Abia State.
The cooperative pledged to build on the growing recognition of Akwete by preserving traditional weaving techniques, training younger women, maintaining quality standards and embracing innovation without compromising the authenticity of the craft.
It further pledged to promote Akwete fabric within Nigeria and internationally while safeguarding the identity, history and cultural significance attached to the Akwete name.
The society described the renewed attention to Akwete weaving as an important development for the community and prayed God to continue to grant Senator Tinubu, Governor Otti and Mrs. Priscilla Otti wisdom, strength, good health and grace in their service to humanity.

The women reaffirmed their determination to keep the Akwete heritage alive, declaring that the hands of Akwete women would continue to weave a legacy of creativity, resilience, craftsmanship and Nigerian cultural pride.
Recall that during the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu’s historic visit to Akwete in July 2026, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, announced a ₦2 billion intervention to support the revitalisation of Akwete textile production and empower the indigenous women engaged in the traditional craft. The intervention was aimed at strengthening the weaving industry, preserving Akwete’s cultural heritage and creating greater economic opportunities for the women whose skills have sustained the centuries-old tradition.
The gesture has been widely regarded as a significant boost to the visibility and commercial prospects of Akwete fabric, while reinforcing the importance of promoting indigenous Nigerian crafts and locally made products.
