2027: INEC Fixes Dates for Presidential, Governorship, NASS Polls
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the timetable and schedule for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, dismissed earlier reports claiming that the electoral body had already released the election timetable prior to its formal announcement.
Prof. Amupitan explained that the release of the schedule was in strict compliance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria and the Electoral Act 2022, both of which mandate the Commission to provide adequate notice and clear timelines ahead of general elections.
According to the INEC Chairman, the Presidential Election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 20, 2027, while the Governorship, Senatorial, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2027.
He assured Nigerians that the Commission remains committed to conducting free, fair and credible elections, adding that detailed guidelines and activities leading up to the polls would be made available to political parties, stakeholders and the general public in due course.
The announcement formally sets the stage for political parties and aspirants to begin preparations ahead of what is expected to be another pivotal electoral cycle in the country.
