Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has decried the worsening economic hardship in Nigeria, saying citizens are facing extremely difficult times amid soaring cost of living and rising food prices.
Speaking in Umuahia, Abia State, during the flag-off of the ADC Membership Mobilisation, Registration and Revalidation Exercise, Mark lamented that many families are being stretched beyond their limits while small businesses struggle to survive.
Represented at the event by the party’s National Welfare Secretary, Comrade Nkem Ukandu, the former Senate President criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that too many promises had failed to translate into meaningful relief for ordinary Nigerians. He stressed that governance should reduce hardship, not deepen anxiety.
Beyond economic concerns, Mark raised questions about the democratic process, insisting that elections must operate on a level playing field where no party enjoys undue advantage and opposition voices are protected.
Contributing, the Senator representing Abia South at the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, accused the APC of poor economic management and lack of direction. He alleged that federal contractors have not been paid since 2024 and criticised the non-implementation of the 2025 national budget, which he said was merely rolled over without tangible impact.
Abaribe also said the APC-led government had failed to provide effective leadership, insisting that the party “knows nothing and has done nothing” to alleviate Nigerians’ suffering. He urged citizens dissatisfied with the current state of affairs to join the ADC as a credible vehicle for national renewal.
Unveiling the party register, Dame Ngozi Onyioha-Orji described the ADC as an inclusive, people-driven party and called on members to shun division, emphasising the need for the party to be “worthy of emulation.”
Other party leaders also addressed the gathering. Hon. Suleiman Ukandu (Abia Central) pledged that the ADC would champion Nigeria’s progress, while Hon. Uko Nkole (Abia North) urged unity to restore good governance, warning that the APC had attempted to rig elections in advance.
Ike Bishop Okoronkwo called on youths to join the party and focus on peace, unity, and love, while Ugoeze Elizabeth Obioma urged women to actively participate, describing the ADC as a platform designed to rescue Nigeria. Barrister Etigwe Uwa highlighted the importance of the Party Membership Card (PMC) in empowering citizens and ensuring accountability within parties.
The exercise marks a major step in the ADC’s strategy to consolidate grassroots support, strengthen party structures, and position itself as a credible alternative in Abia and nationwide ahead of the 2026 general elections.
