African football legend and former Liberian President, George Weah, has strongly criticized the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.
CAF’s Appeal Board delivered the controversial ruling after Morocco filed a petition challenging the outcome of the final. The board determined that Senegal’s abandonment of the pitch during the chaotic encounter constituted a forfeiture, thereby nullifying the original 1-0 result.
As a result, Morocco was awarded a 3-0 walkover victory and officially declared champions of the 2025 AFCON tournament.
Reacting in a statement on Thursday, Weah insisted that football matches must be decided on the field of play, not through post-match rulings. He described the development as a “travesty” and called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and other relevant authorities to intervene.
According to him, decisions taken after the final whistle should not override the authority of match officials who presided over the game.
“Football must be decided on the pitch, not re-decided after the final whistle,” Weah said, urging a swift and decisive review of the matter to preserve the integrity of the sport.
The controversy has continued to spark reactions across the football world, with Senegal forward Sadio Mané also condemning CAF’s decision to award the title to Morocco.
The ruling remains one of the most debated decisions in recent African football history, with stakeholders divided over its implications for fairness, governance, and the credibility of continental competitions.
