Businessman and philanthropist, Dr. Chima Desmond Anyaso, has brought a message of hope and practical support to inmates of the Umuahia Medium Security Custodial Center, assuring them that their present condition does not define their future.

During his visit, Dr. Anyaso encouraged the inmates to hold firmly to their faith, stressing that incarceration is not God’s plan for anyone. “God did not ordain anyone to live in trouble. There is still hope, and God will surely rescue you,” he told them, while sharing personal experiences of resilience and faith.

Backed by concrete interventions, Dr. Anyaso donated tyres and five batteries to revive three grounded vehicles used for transporting inmates to court, as well as bags of rice and clothing items. He further pledged to renovate the National Open University building within the facility and sponsor NECO registration fees for 16 inmates currently pursuing education.

He also announced plans to collaborate with the Nigeria Correctional Service through the prison ministry of his church, House on the Rock, to provide consistent support and spiritual guidance.

Receiving the philanthropist, the Deputy Controller of the facility, DCC Mabia Ojiakor Michael, described the gesture as an example of true leadership. “Choosing to spend time with those behind the walls shows compassion, love, and a commitment to service,” he said, while highlighting overcrowding as a major challenge, with the center currently holding 843 inmates, 95% of whom are young people and mostly school dropouts.

The General Provost of the inmates, Mr. Chikadi Dick, expressed appreciation on behalf of the inmates, thanking Dr. Anyaso for his generosity and DCC Ojiakor for his fatherly leadership. He also appealed for further support, including the restoration of their viewing center.

Dr. Anyaso’s visit was both a relief effort and a reminder that with faith, education, and support, inmates can embrace second chances and rebuild their lives.
