Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has approved a ₦150,000 Christmas bonus for all civil servants in the state as part of measures to enhance workers’ welfare during the 2025 festive season.
The governor made the announcement on Sunday during a church service at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki. He said the gesture reflects his administration’s commitment to supporting civil servants despite the economic challenges and dwindling revenue accruing to the state in the past year.
Governor Nwifuru noted that the bonus was intended to ease the financial burden on workers and enable them to celebrate Christmas with their families in dignity. He reiterated that the welfare of Ebonyi workers remains a priority of his government.
During the service, the governor also addressed public concerns over the pace of work on the Vincent Agwu Nwankwo Flyover, popularly known as VANCO, describing reports of stagnation on the project as misleading. He stressed that the flyover remains one of the most significant infrastructure projects currently underway in the country.
“You cannot find any state in Nigeria that is doing such a flyover currently,” Nwifuru said, while explaining the technical rigours and complexities involved in executing the project.
He expressed concern over what he described as misinformation and negative narratives by “social media contractors,” noting that such commentary often ignores the scale and long-term benefits of the project.
According to the governor, the VANCO flyover, when completed, will transform the landscape of the state capital, eliminate traffic bottlenecks, and give Abakaliki a modern outlook befitting a progressive state.
Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s determination to invest in critical infrastructure, stating that the projects are not driven by surplus resources but by a desire to leave a lasting legacy.
“We are doing it not because we have money. We are doing it because we want to sign our signature in the annals of history,” he said.
The governor added that Ebonyi State is positioning itself to be recognized on the global map for good governance, driven by modern infrastructure and people-oriented policies.
