Women in Rivers State have been urged to take advantage of available opportunities, develop their capacities and actively participate in business, politics and community development.
This was disclosed today, during the monthly prayer meeting of Rivers Women Unite for SIM (RWUS), organised in collaboration with its parent body, Rivers Women Unite Organisation (RWUOG).
The meeting combined prayers and spiritual exhortation with business enlightenment and discussions on women’s empowerment, providing participants with an opportunity to share experiences and encourage one another.
The spiritual session was led by Dr. Mrs. Queen Karibi-Botoye, with participants engaging in prayers, spiritual exercises and moments of reflection.
Speaking on political participation, Dr. Mrs. Nancy Nwankwo urged the women not to sell their votes, stressing that temporary incentives offered during elections could not be compared with the long-term effects of political decisions on individuals and communities.
She encouraged the women to safeguard their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and use their voting rights responsibly.
Also speaking, Honourable Dr. Mrs. Tekena Wokoma, a politician, entrepreneur and businesswoman, encouraged the women to embrace legitimate business opportunities and financial facilities while maintaining integrity, discipline and accountability.
Drawing from her business experience, Wokoma said access to loans and other financial facilities could support enterprise development when properly managed and repaid.
She urged the women to use financial opportunities responsibly, honour their obligations and build trust and credibility through honesty and integrity.
Wokoma also encouraged greater participation by women in politics and public affairs, urging them to move beyond supporting political campaigns to seeking elective positions and taking up leadership roles.
She said women should aspire to become candidates, decision-makers and leaders rather than remaining at the level of supporters and campaigners.
A member of RWUOG, Dr. Margaret Ayara, said the organisation had continued to equip women with practical skills to strengthen their families and contribute to community development.
She noted that skills acquisition and economic empowerment complemented spiritual development by helping women build confidence, improve their livelihoods and work towards financial independence.
The organisers said the September meeting further demonstrated the importance of combining faith, knowledge, integrity and courage in empowering women to maximise opportunities and contribute meaningfully to society.
