Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, launched the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Women Agricultural Empowerment Programme in Rivers State, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara pledging additional support to strengthen the impact of the scheme.

The event, held at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on October 14, 2025, saw the First Lady represented by the wife of the Governor, Lady Valerie Fubara.

Senator Tinubu, through her representative, underscored the need for Nigerians to embrace farming as a sustainable culture that can be passed down through generations to enhance food security and improve livelihoods.

Under the initiative, beneficiaries received farm implements, seedlings, and fingerlings to encourage smallholder farmers, cooperatives, and individuals to “grow what they eat.”

Lady Fubara described the Renewed Hope Initiative as a programme founded on love and urged beneficiaries, especially young women, to view the support as a long-term investment in food sufficiency and economic growth.

“Fortunately for us in Rivers State, the Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, is passionate about agriculture,” she stated. “He has directed that 400 persons in the State be supported with farming inputs and other agricultural materials to complement this empowerment effort.”

She thanked the Governor for his continued commitment to agricultural development and urged the beneficiaries to use the materials judiciously.

“It is your duty to plant, nurture, and harvest these crops for the market. In doing so, you’ll reignite the entrepreneurial spirit our people are known for,” Lady Fubara said.

Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu, who also spoke at the event, commended Senator Tinubu for the empowerment initiative and charged the beneficiaries to ensure that the intervention yields positive and lasting results that contribute to food sufficiency and economic prosperity in Rivers State.
