Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has arrived in Madrid to officially assume duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Spain.
Ikpeazu, who recently received his diplomatic appointment from the Federal Government, was welcomed on arrival by the Ambassador of Angola to Spain, Her Excellency Balbina Malheiros Dias da Silva, the Consul of the Embassy of Nigeria in Madrid, Mrs. Binta Abubakar Dala, alongside members of the diplomatic corps, senior embassy officials and staff.
He was accompanied by his wife, Deaconess Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, as they commenced the ambassadorial assignment.
The reception underscored the cordial relationship among diplomatic missions in Spain and reflected the optimism surrounding the former governor’s appointment.
With years of experience in governance and public administration, Ambassador Ikpeazu is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic relations with Spain by promoting cooperation in key sectors, including trade and investment, agriculture, education, science and technology, tourism, energy, culture, migration and security.
His responsibilities will also include protecting Nigeria’s national interests, enhancing consular services for Nigerians residing in Spain, fostering stronger engagement with the Nigerian diaspora, attracting foreign investment and expanding commercial and cultural partnerships between both countries.
Speaking shortly after the ambassador’s arrival, Dr. Godfrey Chukwuemeka Evurulobi expressed confidence in Ikpeazu’s ability to deepen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Spain.
According to him, the former Abia governor’s wealth of experience in leadership and public service positions him to consolidate existing diplomatic ties while exploring new opportunities for cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Ambassador Ikpeazu’s assumption of office marks the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria-Spain relations, with expectations of stronger political engagement, increased economic cooperation, enhanced institutional partnerships and improved people-to-people exchanges.
His appointment is also seen as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence in Europe through economic diplomacy, strategic partnerships and mutually beneficial international cooperation.
