Islamic cleric and leader of the Izala Scholars Council, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, has defended his support for a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, saying he has no regret over his recent comments.
Jingir, who spoke in an interview with the BBC, said his position was based on his religious convictions and was not intended to campaign for President Bola Tinubu.
He maintained that he would continue to encourage Muslims to support a Muslim-Muslim ticket despite criticism from sections of the public.
“I have no regrets. I will continue to support and encourage the Muslim-Muslim ticket. What they say will not stop me,” he said.
The cleric had earlier expressed the position at a mass wedding organised by the Kano State Government for 1,500 couples, where he urged Muslims to use their numerical strength in determining the country’s political leadership.
Jingir also defended his right as a Muslim preacher to advocate a political arrangement aligned with his religious beliefs while disputing claims that Christians outnumber Muslims in Nigeria.
His comments have continued to attract reactions, with critics describing the position as divisive, while others maintain that he has the right to express his religious and political views.
