The Federal Government has recalled 57 retired Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) in a swift move to address critical manpower shortages in the nation’s aviation sector.
This intervention follows sustained concerns from industry stakeholders over dwindling personnel strength, excessive workload, and operational fatigue among serving controllers — issues that have raised safety concerns and threatened seamless air traffic management across Nigerian airports.
According to aviation authorities, the recalled officers will provide immediate support to overstretched teams while government accelerates ongoing recruitment and training programmes.
The shortage of qualified ATCs has been a long-standing challenge, with aviation unions repeatedly warning that the situation, if not urgently tackled, could compromise flight safety and operations nationwide.
Industry observers have welcomed the move but stressed the need for a long-term strategy, noting that recalling retirees is a temporary measure. They urged faster investment in training, modern equipment, and improved welfare packages to attract and retain skilled personnel in the system.
The recalled controllers are expected to resume duties after medical and proficiency clearance procedures.
