A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday held a peaceful demonstration at the United States Embassy in Abuja, urging the international community to intervene in what they described as an increasing threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
The protest, attended by party members and youth supporters, was aimed at drawing global attention to alleged political intimidation and what they claim is a growing attempt to steer the country toward a one-party system.
The demonstrators marched to the embassy carrying placards and chanting pro-democracy messages. They called on the U.S. government and other international allies to help safeguard democratic institutions, protect opposition voices, and ensure transparency in Nigeria’s political process.
Speaking during the protest, one of the leaders of the faction said the rally was necessary “to alert the world that Nigeria’s democracy is under pressure,” stressing that credible opposition is critical to the survival of a democratic system. He accused government agencies of harassment and suppression of opposition figures, warning that silence could embolden actions that might undermine the country’s democratic foundations.
The group submitted a petition to U.S. officials, urging diplomatic engagement and monitoring of political developments ahead of future elections.
The embassy staff accepted the petition but did not immediately issue a public statement on the matter.
The protest, which lasted several hours, remained peaceful and was closely monitored by security personnel.
