Former Bayelsa State Governor and ex–Minister of State for Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva, has rejected reports linking him to an alleged coup plot, describing the claims as baseless and politically motivated.
In a statement issued today by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Julius Bokoru, Sylva insisted he remains committed to democratic principles and fully supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“These allegations are completely false, malicious, and part of a calculated attempt to tarnish Chief Sylva’s reputation as 2027 approaches,” Bokoru said. “He has always pursued peace, dialogue, and democratic engagement in public affairs.”
Raid on Sylva’s Abuja Home
Bokoru confirmed that security personnel, believed to be attached to the Defence Headquarters, recently stormed Sylva’s Abuja residence, reportedly causing significant property damage.
He noted that neither Sylva nor his family was briefed on the reason for the operation. At the time of the raid, Sylva and his wife were reportedly outside Nigeria.
“His Excellency was in the United Kingdom for routine medical checks and was scheduled to attend a professional conference in Malaysia,” Bokoru stated.
Loyalty to Tinubu, APC Reaffirmed
The media aide emphasized that Sylva remains loyal to President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissing the allegations as a smear campaign aimed at weakening his political influence.
“No level of mischief will distort Sylva’s longstanding commitment to President Tinubu and the APC,” Bokoru added.
Political analysts say the development underscores rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with high-profile figures facing intense scrutiny and strategic political attacks.
The Defence Headquarters has yet to issue an official statement regarding the raid or the alleged coup link.
