Achraf Hakimi, Morocco international and Paris Saint-Germain full-back, has been crowned the 2025 CAF Player of the Year, securing Africa’s most prestigious individual football honour.

The 27-year-old clinched the award ahead of Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, who now stars for Galatasaray, and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah of Liverpool. Hakimi’s win ends the reign of Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, who held the title in 2024.

This triumph comes after two consecutive years of finishing as runner-up, making Hakimi’s ascent to the top a significant milestone in his career.

Hakimi’s exceptional 2024/2025 season proved decisive. He played a pivotal role in PSG’s Ligue 1 and French Cup victories, and was instrumental in helping the club secure its first-ever UEFA Champions League title — an achievement many believe sealed his claim to the award.

Although currently nursing an injury, Hakimi still made an appearance at the awards ceremony on Monday night, arriving with his foot heavily strapped, a sight that drew concern and admiration from fans.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured parents of the abducted Kebbi schoolgirls that the government is committed to ensuring the safe return of their children, following last week’s tragic incident in Danko-Wasagu LGA.

Hakimi’s win marks another major accolade in an already illustrious career, cementing his status as one of Africa’s most influential footballers.
