The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a Nigerian Army position and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) camp near Mainte in Borno State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, was made public on Wednesday through the X handle of security analyst Brant (@BrantPhilip_).
According to the terrorist group, the assault resulted in the death of at least 15 soldiers and CJTF members. ISWAP also claimed it destroyed the military base, burnt seven vehicles, and carted away several weapons during the raid.
The announcement has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing shock and concern over the persistent security challenges in the region.
A user identified as Crespo wrote: “15 soldiers k!ll£d or what did I just read? Please tell us this is not true. We can’t continue like this. And who’s leaking military movement to the public?”
Another commentator, Pforpeelyidk1, questioned the accuracy of the report, asking whether the entire base was attacked or just a forward position, suggesting the claims may have been exaggerated to support certain militia narratives.
Similarly, SleazyUd criticised the operational posture of troops, saying: “What are those soldiers doing? They are always sitting ducks waiting to defend all the time.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army has not released an official statement confirming or denying the attack, leaving room for further clarification as investigations continue.
The attack underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in Borno and the wider North-East, where communities and security operatives remain vulnerable to renewed offensives.
