Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his commitment to sustained governance and infrastructure delivery, declaring that political distractions will not derail his administration’s focus on development.
Governor Fubara gave the assurance on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, during an inspection tour of ongoing road rehabilitation projects within the old Port Harcourt Township, including the redevelopment of the historic Creek Road Market.
Accompanied by Engineer Michel Issa of Setraco Nigeria Limited, the governor assessed several completed and ongoing roadworks, inspecting rehabilitated streets around Moore House before concluding the tour at the Creek Road Market project site.
Describing the market redevelopment as a critical component of efforts to revitalise the old township, Governor Fubara said the project would restore the area’s commercial vibrancy and address longstanding infrastructural challenges.
He noted that the modern market facility is designed to accommodate traders currently operating along the roads, a situation he identified as a major cause of traffic congestion and the rapid deterioration of road infrastructure along Creek Road.
“What are we trying to do? You can see the difficulty in driving through Creek Road because we don’t have proper settlement for marketers,” the governor stated. “If we fix this market, those trading on the streets will move inside.”
According to him, relocating traders into the upgraded market will not only ease traffic flow but also enable the government to carry out comprehensive road rehabilitation and preserve the structural integrity of the roads.
Governor Fubara further disclosed that the road rehabilitation project spans from Borokiri through major streets across the old township, emphasising that the intervention is holistic and aimed at delivering a lasting upgrade of critical infrastructure.
He stressed that his administration remains committed to improving the aesthetics, functionality and economic relevance of Port Harcourt’s historic districts.
Addressing the prevailing political climate in the state, the governor maintained that his primary responsibility is governance and service delivery.
“I have promised our people that no matter the situation, we will not lose focus on governance,” he said. “They entrusted us with leadership, and the least we owe them is confidence, stability and the assurance that governance will continue strongly.”
Governor Fubara reiterated that his administration would continue to prioritise projects that directly impact the lives of Rivers people, insisting that development, not political pressure, remains his guiding principle.
