Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia South Senatorial District have reaffirmed their support for the outcomes of the party’s primary elections that produced Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr. as the party’s candidate for Abia South Senatorial District and Hon. Chris Nkwonta as candidate for the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a stakeholders’ meeting held in Aba, Abia State, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The communiqué, signed by Elder Godwin Nna, Rt. Hon. Emeka Stanley, Sir Abraham Oba, Sir Don Ubani, Hon. Prince Ezekwesiri, Hon. Okezie Erondu, Eze S. Nwangaga, Prince Stanley Ogbonna, Dcns. Rhoda Emeka, Sir Robinson N., Hon. Fred Eme, Mrs. Alaribe Ngozi, and 69 other APC leaders in Abia South Senatorial District, said the leaders were compelled to speak out following what they described as “unhealthy speculations” and avoidable developments allegedly aimed at undermining the results of the party’s primaries.
The leaders reaffirmed their loyalty to the APC and expressed unwavering confidence in the party’s leadership under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, noting that they actively participated in all the party’s primary elections conducted in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
According to the communiqué, Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr. won the Abia South Senatorial primary conducted on May 18, 2026, while Hon. Chris Nkwonta emerged winner of the APC primary election for the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency held on May 16, 2026.
They maintained that both victories reflected the collective will and aspirations of party members and the people of the affected constituencies.
The APC leaders also cited the Court of Appeal judgment in APC v. Loko & Ors (2022) LPELR-56703 (CA), arguing that the victory of a candidate duly returned as winner of a party primary cannot be overturned by any internal appeal committee. On that basis, they appealed to the party leadership to ensure that the victories of both candidates are not tampered with.
The communiqué further noted that the two primary elections were monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, while the Returning Officer appointed by the APC National Headquarters, Barrister Erasmus Cishak, publicly described the exercises as peaceful, transparent and credible before declaring Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr. and Hon. Chris Nkwonta as winners of their respective contests.
Expressing concern over reports that a “Private Secretary” at the APC National Headquarters was allegedly acting contrary to directives from the party leadership, the leaders described such conduct, if true, as an unprecedented act of disrespect to the party’s highest authorities.
They warned that any attempt to unlawfully alter the outcomes of the primaries could have serious consequences for the APC in Abia South and urged the national leadership to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
The leaders maintained that tampering with the victories of either Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr. or Hon. Chris Nkwonta would not only undermine internal democracy but could also have grave political implications for the party in the 2027 general elections.
