The Senegalese Football Federation has rejected the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board that awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title to Morocco, confirming plans to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
CAF on Tuesday declared Morocco winners of AFCON 2025 after overturning the original result of the final against Senegal, citing a forfeiture by the West African side. The decision followed chaotic scenes during the match in Rabat on January 19, when Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a disallowed goal and a penalty awarded to the hosts.
In its ruling, CAF stated that Senegal violated Articles 82 and 84 of the competition regulations on misconduct and forfeiture, awarding the match 3–0 in favour of Morocco.
Responding in a statement on Wednesday, the Senegalese federation described the decision as “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable,” arguing that it undermines the credibility of African football.
The federation noted that the Appeal Board admitted a protest filed by the Moroccan Football Federation and overturned an earlier decision by CAF’s Disciplinary Board due to a procedural flaw, specifically the failure to respect the appellant’s right to be heard during initial proceedings.
Despite this, Senegal insisted the ruling was unjust and confirmed it would seek redress at CAS in Lausanne, Switzerland.
“The federation will initiate an appeal procedure before the Court of Arbitration for Sport to defend its rights and the interests of Senegalese football,” the statement said.
The body reaffirmed its commitment to due process and pledged to keep the public informed as the legal process unfolds.
