Chief Eric Opah has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 governorship election in Abia State following the conclusion of the party’s primary election.

Announcing the result on Thursday night at the APC Secretariat in Umuahia, the Returning Officer, Barthow Nyelong, declared Opah winner of the exercise after polling 126,977 votes to defeat the other aspirant, Chief Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh, who secured 5,905 votes.

Nyelong stated that Opah satisfied all requirements of the APC constitution and electoral guidelines and was therefore duly elected as the party’s flag bearer for the 2027 governorship poll.

The primary election was conducted across the 184 wards of the state as part of the APC’s staggered nationwide primaries for the 2027 election cycle, which commenced on May 15, 2026.

In a statement after the exercise, the Abia APC commended party members, aspirants, electoral officials and stakeholders for ensuring a peaceful, transparent and credible process, describing the outcome as a reflection of the party’s unity and growing strength in the state.

The party also expressed confidence in Opah’s leadership capacity, experience and vision, urging members and supporters to remain united ahead of the 2027 general elections as the APC intensifies efforts to take over Government House, Umuahia.
